Sandar
Vast, Remote Sands at the Edge of the Westfjords
Sandar is a remote and expansive coastal plain in the southern part of Iceland’s Westfjords, offering a unique blend of tranquility, wide-open landscapes, and raw natural beauty. This windswept area features golden sands stretching toward the icy Atlantic, flanked by distant cliffs and unspoiled tundra. Often overlooked by mainstream tourism, Sandar is perfect for solitude seekers, photographers, and birdwatchers. The beach here feels otherworldly — especially under the glow of midnight sun or in low fog that rolls in from the ocean. It’s located near other Westfjords gems like Látrabjarg (the westernmost point of Europe) and Rauðasandur, making it a peaceful detour along the rugged coastal road network. With no major infrastructure nearby, Sandar offers a back-to-nature experience in one of Iceland’s most untouched regions.
