Ísafjörður
Capital of the Westfjords, Surrounded by Mountains and Sea
Ísafjörður is the largest town in the Westfjords and the region’s cultural, economic, and travel hub. Nestled at the base of steep, glacier-carved mountains and hugging the calm waters of Skutulsfjörður, the town blends history with modern Icelandic life. Its charming harbor, colorful 19th-century houses, and old trading posts reflect its maritime past, while local cafés, galleries, and festivals bring the area to life. Ísafjörður is also the launch point for adventures into the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, one of Iceland’s wildest and most untouched areas. In summer, it’s a paradise for hikers, kayakers, and wildlife watchers. With a population of just over 2,500, it still feels small and peaceful — but offers all the essentials for travelers seeking to explore the remote reaches of the Westfjords.
