The Sun Voyager

A Dreamboat Facing the Sea and the Horizon

The Sun Voyager (Sólfar) is one of Reykjavík’s most beloved landmarks — a gleaming stainless steel sculpture that sits along the city’s scenic waterfront. Created by Icelandic artist Jón Gunnar Árnason, the work resembles a Viking ship but is meant to symbolize a dreamboat, embodying exploration, freedom, and the promise of undiscovered territory. Positioned facing west toward the open sea and the setting sun, the sculpture captures the imagination of visitors with its elegant, skeletal form and its striking placement along the Sæbraut seaside path. It’s a favorite spot for both locals and tourists to reflect, photograph, and enjoy the ever-changing light over Faxaflói Bay. With Mount Esja often visible in the distance, The Sun Voyager offers a quiet but powerful statement about Iceland’s deep connection to the sea and its spirit of adventure.
