Hveravellir
Remote Geothermal Oasis Between Two Glaciers
Hveravellir is a highland geothermal area located on the Kjölur route (F35), between the massive Langjökull and Hofsjökull glaciers. This remote oasis is home to bubbling hot springs, steaming fumaroles, and colorful geothermal formations, all surrounded by lava fields and distant glacier views. Historically, it served as a shelter and rest stop for travelers crossing the highlands, and it’s steeped in Icelandic outlaw legends — particularly that of Fjalla-Eyvindur, who lived here in the 18th century. Today, visitors can soak in a natural hot pool while surrounded by untamed nature, or explore the short walking trails that weave through the geothermal field. With its raw, surreal atmosphere and relative isolation, Hveravellir offers a rare chance to experience Iceland’s interior wilderness, far from the crowds. Accessible in summer by 4x4.
