Hraunfossar
Lava Falls Pouring from Beneath the Earth
Hraunfossar, meaning “Lava Falls,” is a mesmerizing series of waterfalls in West Iceland where countless rivulets of water emerge from beneath the Hallmundarhraun lava field and spill gracefully into the Hvítá river. Unlike typical waterfalls that fall over a cliff edge, Hraunfossar appears as if the earth itself is leaking water — the result of glacial melt seeping through porous volcanic rock. The milky blue color of the river contrasts beautifully with the dark lava and green moss-covered landscape. Well-maintained walking paths and viewing platforms make the area easy to explore, and nearby you’ll also find Barnafoss, another fascinating waterfall with its own folklore. Located near Húsafell, Hraunfossar is a perfect stop for photographers, families, and anyone seeking a quieter but equally stunning natural wonder.
