Rjúkandi Waterfall

A hidden gem right off the Ring Road

Rjúkandi Waterfall (Rjúkandafoss) is a tall, elegant waterfall located just off Route 1 in East Iceland, between Egilsstaðir and Akureyri. Cascading down a rugged mountainside in multiple tiers, the waterfall is visible from the road but is best appreciated up close. A short, easy walking path leads to its base, offering a perfect roadside stop for stretching your legs and soaking in Iceland’s natural beauty. Unlike some of the country’s more famous falls, Rjúkandi remains peaceful and uncrowded, allowing visitors to enjoy the sound of rushing water in solitude. It’s especially dramatic after rainfall or during the spring melt. A must-stop if you’re exploring the scenic and less-traveled Eastfjords.
