The Pearl Observatory (Perlan)

Reykjavík’s Landmark for Nature, Views, and Science

Perlan, known as “The Pearl,” is a glass-domed architectural marvel and cultural institution located atop Öskjuhlíð hill in Reykjavík. Originally built atop hot water storage tanks, Perlan now houses a range of immersive exhibitions focused on Iceland’s unique natural phenomena — including glaciers, volcanoes, and the Northern Lights. One of its main attractions is a real indoor ice cave and glacier exhibit, built with 350 tons of snow. Visitors can also explore the Wonders of Iceland exhibition, a planetarium, and one of the best observation decks in the country, offering 360-degree panoramic views over Reykjavík, the Faxaflói Bay, and beyond. With a café, restaurant, and a rotating glass dome, Perlan is both a cultural and architectural highlight — and a perfect all-weather stop in the capital.
