Akureyrarkirkja

Iconic Hilltop Church Overlooking the Capital of the North

Akureyrarkirkja, or The Church of Akureyri, is a striking Lutheran church that dominates the skyline of Iceland’s northern capital. Designed by famed architect Guðjón Samúelsson — who also designed Reykjavík’s Hallgrímskirkja — the church features a stepped facade and twin towers that reflect early 20th-century modernist influences. Completed in 1940, it sits atop a hill in the center of Akureyri, with a long staircase leading up to its entrance. Inside, visitors will find a beautiful organ with over 3,000 pipes, impressive stained glass (some from Coventry Cathedral in the UK), and a calm, spiritual atmosphere. From the plaza in front of the church, you’ll get one of the best panoramic views over Eyjafjörður and the city itself. Whether you’re religious, an architecture fan, or just seeking a scenic spot, Akureyrarkirkja is a must-visit landmark in North Iceland.
