Thingvellir National Park
A historic site and national park in Iceland
Þingvellir National Park is a place of immense historical and geological significance in Iceland. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was the location of Iceland’s first parliament, Alþingi, established in 930 AD, making it one of the oldest parliamentary sites in the world. Set in a rift valley formed by the separation of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, Þingvellir offers dramatic landscapes, including fissures, lava fields, and pristine waters. Visitors can explore the park’s trails, discover its cultural heritage, and even snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of the Silfra fissure, where the continental plates meet.
