Langjökull
Iceland’s Second-Largest Glacier and Ice Tunnel Wonder
Langjökull, meaning “Long Glacier,” is Iceland’s second-largest ice cap, covering roughly 950 square kilometers in the central highlands. Its broad, dome-like shape dominates the landscape, feeding glacial rivers and shaping the terrain for miles around. Langjökull is not just a natural wonder — it’s also home to one of Iceland’s most unique experiences: the Into the Glacier tour, which allows visitors to walk inside man-made tunnels carved deep into the glacier’s blue ice. Accessible by super jeep or snowmobile from various directions (including Húsafell and Gullfoss), Langjökull offers dramatic views, snow-covered wilderness, and a sense of vast, icy solitude. It’s also a critical source for Iceland’s river systems and holds scientific and environmental significance. A visit here offers adventure, beauty, and a deeper appreciation for Iceland’s icy heart.
