Fjaðrárgljúfur is a stunning, serpentine canyon located in south-east Iceland, near the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Formed over 2 million years ago during the Ice Age, the canyon was carved by glacial meltwater flowing through soft palagonite bedrock. It stretches approximately 2 kilometers long and plunges up to 100 meters deep, offering dramatic cliffs, lush greenery, and a winding river at its base. Easily accessible and with well-maintained walking paths, Fjaðrárgljúfur is a favorite for photographers and nature lovers. Its popularity surged after being featured in music videos and travel campaigns, yet it still retains a quiet, almost mythical beauty. The canyon perfectly captures the raw elegance of Iceland’s unique geology.
