Hvítserkur
A 15 m high basalt stack along the eastern shore of the Vatnsnes peninsula
Hvítserkur, a striking rock formation off the coast of Vatnsnes Peninsula in North Iceland, is a natural wonder steeped in folklore. Rising 15 meters from the sea, the basalt stack resembles a giant animal—some say a dragon, others a rhino—drinking from the water. According to legend, Hvítserkur was once a troll turned to stone by the rising sun while attempting to destroy a nearby monastery.
Beyond its mythical allure, Hvítserkur is a haven for birdlife, with seabirds often nesting in its crevices. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the formation from the black sand beach below or take in the coastal scenery, which is dotted with seals and rugged cliffs.
