Kirkjufellsfoss

The Photogenic Waterfall Framing Kirkjufell Mountain

Kirkjufellsfoss is a small but picture-perfect waterfall located just across the road from the iconic Kirkjufell mountain on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Its cascading tiers and position directly in front of Kirkjufell make it one of Iceland’s most famous photographic scenes — especially at sunset or when the northern lights dance overhead. The falls themselves are fed by a glacial river and can be easily reached by a short trail from the roadside parking area. Though modest in size, Kirkjufellsfoss perfectly complements the dramatic shape of the mountain behind it, creating a surreal and balanced composition beloved by photographers from around the world. The surrounding area also offers peaceful walking trails and views over the nearby fjord. A must-stop on any Snæfellsnes road trip.
