Djúpvegur
Scenic Fjord-Side Road Through the Westfjords
Djúpvegur (Route 61) is the lifeline road through the northern Westfjords, winding along steep cliffs and deep fjords with jaw-dropping views at nearly every turn. This stretch near Bolungarvík hugs the edge of towering mountains and offers wide panoramas across the calm waters of Ísafjarðardjúp, Iceland’s largest fjord. Travelers will find themselves pulling over often to take in the sights — from mirror-like reflections on the water to the jagged silhouettes of distant peaks. In clear weather, you can see across the fjord to snow-covered ridges and isolated farms clinging to the shoreline. Whether you’re road-tripping through the Westfjords or heading out from Ísafjörður, Djúpvegur is more than just a road — it’s an immersive part of the Westfjords experience. Best enjoyed slowly, with a camera ready.
