Hverfjall
Hike the Rim of a Perfect Volcanic Crater
Hverfjall is a striking tephra cone crater near Lake Mývatn in North Iceland, known for its nearly perfect circular shape and massive scale — about 1 km in diameter and 140 meters deep. Formed in a volcanic eruption around 2,500 years ago, Hverfjall dominates the landscape and is easily accessible via hiking paths that lead to and around its rim. The hike is short but steep, and once on top, you’re rewarded with panoramic views over the Mývatn region, nearby lava fields, and pseudocraters. Hverfjall is part of the broader volcanic zone that defines this area, making it a key stop for geology enthusiasts and nature lovers. The barren, black slopes of the crater give it a moon-like feel — one of Iceland’s most memorable and photogenic sites.
