Neskaupstathur
Eastern Iceland’s fjord town at the edge of the world
Neskaupstaður is a picturesque fishing town located on the Norðfjörður fjord in East Iceland. Known as the country’s easternmost town, it’s nestled between steep mountains and the North Atlantic, offering a dramatic setting far off the typical tourist trail. Once accessible only by boat or mountain trail, today it’s reachable by a tunnel through the mountains—though it still retains a sense of isolation and tranquility. The town features the East Iceland Maritime Museum, lively summer festivals, and access to hiking trails that lead to the cliffs of Gerpir, Iceland’s easternmost point. With its charming harbor, colorful homes, and raw coastal scenery, Neskaupstaður is a cultural and natural gem worth the detour.
