Seljalandsfoss
The Waterfall You Can Walk Behind on Iceland’s South Coast
Seljalandsfoss is one of Iceland’s most famous and photogenic waterfalls, located just off the Ring Road on the South Coast. Dropping 60 meters (197 feet) from the cliffs of the former coastline, its standout feature is a path that allows you to walk behind the waterfall — offering a thrilling, wet, and truly immersive experience. The view from inside the cave-like space behind the curtain of water is especially magical at sunset or when rainbows form in the mist. Seljalandsfoss is fed by the Seljalands River, which originates from the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. The surrounding area also features other lesser-known falls, including Gljúfrabúi, a hidden gem tucked inside a nearby canyon. With easy access, parking, and pathways, Seljalandsfoss is an unmissable stop for any South Iceland itinerary. Just bring a raincoat!
