Kaldadalsvegur (Route 550)

Iceland’s second-highest mountain road

Kaldadalsvegur, also known as Route 550 or the Kaldidalur Route, is one of Iceland’s classic highland tracks. It stretches approximately 40 kilometers between Þingvellir National Park and the Borgarfjörður region, passing along the western edge of the Langjökull glacier. Though shorter and less rugged than other highland roads like F35 (Kjölur) or F26 (Sprengisandur), Kaldadalsvegur still offers breathtaking scenery: barren lava fields, glacial views, and a true sense of isolation. The route is unpaved and best suited for 4x4 vehicles, typically open only in summer. Kaldadalsvegur is ideal for adventurous travelers seeking a less touristy way to explore Iceland’s interior without venturing too far from the southwest region.
