Eldborg Volcanic Crater

A perfectly shaped volcanic crater in West Iceland

Eldborg (“Fire Castle”) is a striking volcanic crater located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland. Rising sharply from the surrounding lava field, its nearly perfect circular shape and steep, symmetrical walls make it one of the most visually impressive craters in the country. Eldborg last erupted around 5,000 to 8,000 years ago, and today it stands as a dramatic geological monument to Iceland’s volcanic past. A well-marked hiking trail (about 2.5 km each way) leads visitors through mossy lava fields to the crater’s rim, where panoramic views await. The hike is suitable for most fitness levels, and the area’s raw natural beauty offers a quiet, almost spiritual experience. Eldborg is an excellent destination for geology enthusiasts, hikers, and anyone interested in Iceland’s fiery origins.
