Lava Field

A surreal green landscape shaped by volcanic eruptions

This moss-covered lava field in Skaftárhreppur, South Iceland, offers one of the most unique and dreamlike landscapes in the country. Stretching for miles across the region, the field was formed by ancient volcanic eruptions—most notably from the Laki eruption in the 18th century—and is now cloaked in a thick, soft layer of vibrant green moss. The moss gives the terrain a surreal, almost alien appearance, making it a favorite for photographers and nature enthusiasts. Visitors are encouraged to stay on marked paths, as the moss is fragile and can take decades to recover from damage. The contrast between the lush green moss and the dark volcanic rock underneath creates an unforgettable visual experience. This is a peaceful, otherworldly stop on any journey through South Iceland’s volcanic heartland.
