Eyjafjallajökull
Iceland’s infamous glacier-covered volcano
Eyjafjallajökull is one of Iceland’s most well-known volcanoes, largely due to its 2010 eruption that disrupted air travel across Europe. Located in South Iceland, this volcano is covered by an ice cap and reaches a height of around 1,651 meters (5,417 ft). Despite its notoriety, it is an incredibly scenic and accessible destination for visitors. Surrounded by lush valleys, thundering waterfalls like Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, and vast stretches of farmland, Eyjafjallajökull blends Iceland’s fire and ice perfectly. While the summit is best left to experienced mountaineers or guided glacier tours, you can enjoy excellent views from the surrounding roads and visitor centers. Educational exhibitions nearby explain the 2010 eruption and its global impact. Eyjafjallajökull is a must-see for geology lovers and those intrigued by the raw power of nature.
