Sprengisandur Canyon Pass
The wild heart of Iceland’s highland interior
Sprengisandur is Iceland’s longest and most remote highland road, running between the glaciers Hofsjökull and Vatnajökull. At this specific point, the route narrows into a canyon-like section—a dramatic change from the open black sand desert that dominates most of F26. This pass gives travelers a fleeting sense of enclosure in an otherwise vast and barren environment. Historically feared and revered, Sprengisandur was once thought to be haunted and was rarely crossed outside of summer. Today, it remains an adventurous 4x4-only track for those seeking to explore the rawest parts of Iceland. This section, near Veiðivötn and the Tungnaá River, adds surprising topographic interest to an already legendary journey.
