Basilicata
A Region of Ancient Wonders
Basilicata, located in southern Italy, is known for its dramatic landscapes and ancient history. The region’s most famous site is the town of Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its ancient cave dwellings, or sassi, which have been inhabited since prehistoric times. Basilicata’s rugged mountains and forests provide a stark contrast to its sandy beaches along the Tyrrhenian and Ionian coasts. The region’s cuisine is simple and rustic, with dishes like pasta with breadcrumbs and local cheeses.
