Rauthisandur
Red-Golden Sands Stretching for Miles in the Westfjords
Rauðisandur, meaning “Red Sand,” is a spectacular and secluded beach on Iceland’s remote Westfjords coast. Unlike the country’s more famous black sand beaches, Rauðisandur is composed of striking red and golden sand, which changes hue depending on the light and weather. Spanning over 10 kilometers, the beach is bordered by mountains and backed by silence — broken only by seabirds and the distant roar of the ocean. Accessible via a winding gravel road from Patreksfjörður, the journey is part of the adventure, revealing sweeping views along the way. At low tide, the expansive beach becomes even more dramatic, offering mirror-like reflections and solitude rarely found elsewhere. Ideal for quiet walks, photography, and birdwatching, Rauðisandur is one of Iceland’s most peaceful and otherworldly locations.
