The Unity of the Realm
Greenland, Denmark, and the Faroe Islands
Rigsfællesskabet, or The Unity of the Realm, refers to the political relationship between Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. Though part of the Kingdom of Denmark, both Greenland and the Faroe Islands have extensive home rule and manage most of their own domestic affairs.
Greenland gained home rule in 1979 and self-rule in 2009, allowing it control over areas such as education, health, and natural resources. Denmark retains responsibility for foreign policy, defense, and monetary affairs, but Greenland can make international agreements in areas under its authority.
This relationship is unique: it preserves shared ties while recognizing the distinct identities, cultures, and political aspirations of each part of the Realm. While debates about future independence exist in both Greenland and the Faroe Islands, Rigsfællesskabet remains a framework for cooperation, support, and dialogue across the North Atlantic.
