East Cape Lighthouse

Easternmost Point

The East Cape Lighthouse is a historic and scenic landmark located at East Cape, the easternmost point of mainland New Zealand, in the Gisborne region. Built in 1900, the lighthouse originally stood on East Island but was relocated to the mainland in 1922 for easier access. Today, it stands atop Otiki Hill, overlooking the vast Pacific Ocean.

Visitors can reach the lighthouse by climbing a staircase of over 700 steps, offering panoramic views of rugged coastlines, rolling hills, and the open sea. It’s a popular spot to watch the sunrise, as East Cape is one of the first places in the world to greet the new day.

Surrounded by rich Māori culture and remote natural beauty, the East Cape Lighthouse provides a serene and inspiring experience, ideal for adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike.
