Rangitoto Island
Auckland’s Volcanic Island
Rangitoto Island, located in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf, is an iconic volcanic island and one of New Zealand’s most recognizable landmarks. Formed by a volcanic eruption approximately 600 years ago, it is the youngest and largest volcano in the Auckland volcanic field.
The island is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering walking and hiking trails, including the popular Rangitoto Summit Track, which rewards visitors with panoramic views of Auckland, the Hauraki Gulf, and neighboring islands. The island is also home to the world’s largest pōhutukawa forest and unique lava caves that can be explored.
Accessible by ferry from Auckland, Rangitoto is predator-free, making it a sanctuary for native birds and a fascinating destination for nature lovers, history buffs, and adventurers.
