Skaftafellsjökull
Glacier tongues and epic ice views
Skaftafellsjökull is a breathtaking glacier outlet of the larger Vatnajökull ice cap, located in southeastern Iceland within Vatnajökull National Park. It offers visitors a chance to witness dramatic ice formations and glacier tongues spilling into a broad valley, set against a backdrop of black volcanic sands and rugged mountains. Easily accessible by foot from the Skaftafell visitor center, this glacier is one of the most visited natural sites in Iceland, offering scenic hiking trails such as the one to Svartifoss waterfall and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the icy expanse. Though it has been retreating due to climate change, Skaftafellsjökull remains a vivid and humbling encounter with the raw forces of nature and is a must-see for those traveling along Iceland’s southern coast.
