Almannaskarðsgöng – Höfn Viewpoint

Scenic Gateway to Höfn with Glacier and Ocean Views

Almannaskarðsgöng is a tunnel just south of Höfn that replaced the old mountain road over Almannaskarð Pass. Above the tunnel lies a spectacular viewpoint, accessible via a short drive or hike, offering expansive views over Höfn, the Atlantic Ocean, and the distant tongues of Vatnajökull Glacier. On clear days, the surrounding peaks and coastal lowlands create a breathtaking panorama that makes this spot a perfect pull-off for photography or a peaceful stop on your Ring Road journey. The site also holds historical significance — the old road and pass were once a vital link in Iceland’s southeastern transportation network. Now, the viewpoint above Almannaskarðsgöng provides one of the most memorable scenes on the approach to or departure from Höfn.
