Hnausapollur (Bláhylur)
Vivid Crater Lake in the Heart of Iceland’s Highlands
Hnausapollur, also known as Bláhylur (“Blue Pool”), is a stunning explosion crater lake located in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, near Landmannalaugar. Formed around 1,200 years ago in a powerful volcanic eruption, the lake now sits quietly within steep crater walls, filled with deep blue water that contrasts dramatically with the surrounding red and black volcanic rock. At an elevation of about 570 meters, it’s accessible via the F208 Highland road (in summer), offering a peaceful stop for photographers, hikers, and geology enthusiasts. The area is rich in rhyolite formations and geothermal activity, making it a key destination on the popular Landmannalaugar loop. The viewpoint over Hnausapollur is easily reached by car and provides some of the most photogenic scenery in the Icelandic Highlands — a place where fire and ice have sculpted something truly serene.
