Djúpalónssandur beach
Shipwrecks, Lava Formations, and Legends by the Sea
Djúpalónssandur is a hauntingly beautiful black sand beach located at the foot of Snæfellsjökull on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. This remote stretch of coastline is strewn with smooth black pebbles — known as Djúpalónsperlur, or “Pearls of Djúpalón” — and is flanked by jagged lava formations shaped by past volcanic eruptions. The beach also holds historical weight: twisted remains of a British trawler wrecked here in 1948 still lie scattered across the sand, a somber reminder of the ocean’s power. Visitors will also find four ancient lifting stones once used to test the strength of fishermen. Legends say this beach was once home to hidden villages and sea spirits. With its eerie atmosphere, scenic trails, and cultural depth, Djúpalónssandur is a must-see for travelers seeking Iceland’s wilder, lesser-known coastal treasures.
