Diamond Beach
Shimmering Ice on Black Sand
Diamond Beach is the nickname given to the striking black sand shoreline just across the road from Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where chunks of ice break off from the glacier, drift through the lagoon, and wash up on the shore. The result is a surreal and glittering display of crystal-clear and blue-toned icebergs scattered across jet-black volcanic sand — a natural contrast that photographers and travelers around the world seek out. The beach offers mesmerizing views all year round, whether under golden summer light or the soft pink hues of a winter sunrise. With seals sometimes spotted nearby and the crashing Atlantic waves creating dramatic moments, Diamond Beach offers a front-row seat to the raw interaction between ice, ocean, and volcanic earth. It’s one of Iceland’s most unique and photogenic locations.
