Greenland at a Glance

Key Facts About the World’s Largest Island

Greenland is the world’s largest island, covering over 2.1 million square kilometers—about three times the size of Texas. Yet, despite its vast area, it has a population of only around 56,000 people, making it one of the most sparsely populated places on Earth.

About 80% of Greenland is covered by an ice sheet, with people living mainly along the ice-free, fjord-lined coast. The largest town is Nuuk, the capital, home to over 19,000 residents.

Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with its own parliament and official language, Greenlandic (Kalaallisut). The currency is the Danish krone, and the majority religion is Evangelical Lutheran.

With no roads between towns, unique wildlife, and dramatic natural landscapes, Greenland stands out not only for its size—but for its remarkable resilience, culture, and beauty.
